After 20 amazing years firmly rooted in Winchester, we have finally begun to realised our much talked about dream of moving far far away from it all.
Yesterday it got a bit real as we braved the trip from Winchester to Swansea to take part in a property auction for the house of our dreams, Hendre Fawr and 6 acres of land ‘Tan-y-graig’.
It’s going to take a long time to realise its full potential but we saw it and immediately fell in love with the quirkiness of the property, the amazing ‘have to be seen to be believed’ views, the fresh mountain air, the solitude, the spring water that comes directly via the taps.
The auction itself was brutal. We could really see ourselves living here so the pressure was on to win it. With everything we think we need to do we had calculated our maximum budget at £155k. The bidding started low at around £95k and soon picked up pace increasing at £1k per bid. It slowed at £124k but someone else jumped in, then another bidder and another. The bids starting jumping by £2k each time and quickly rose to £150k and then a pause. £152k, back to me at £154k – £156 anyone? £155k? £154,500?! After an interminable length of time (going once, going twice…anyone else etc. etc.) the hammer went down and we won our dream house by nats whisker.
I think we were in a bit of a haze on the 4-hour return journey. I think I can honestly say that the auction experience was more intense than leaping from a plane…but we have the house and we’re moving in just a couple of months…exciting times!
